32 The Way of the Cross. As they went out, they encountered a man from Cyrene,[a] named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.
33 Jesus Is Crucified on Calvary. When they came to a place called Golgotha, which means the Place of the Skull,[b] 34 they offered him some wine to drink that had been mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink the mixture.[c]

- Matthew 27:33 Skull (Latin: calvaria): a rounded, rocky elevation, about fifteen feet high. It was a former quarry that functioned as a garbage dump.
- Matthew 27:34 The wine mixed with gall was meant to alleviate suffering.
